Your Opinion: Officers' lives also matter

Dear Editor:

We have recently heard an outcry about the injustice inflicted on black men by police. There are bad people in all walks of life and no doubt a few of them are police officers. The bad ones should be weeded out and punished for any crimes they have committed.

Read the statistics below and think about how living with this knowledge, every day you showed up for work, might impact your reactions if you were a police officer.

So far in 2015, 10 police officers have been killed by gunfire and one during as assault. Perpetrators have been arrested, or were killed during the confrontations, in 10 of the 11 homicides. In six of those 10 cases the assumed perpetrator/s were black, even though blacks make up only 13 percent of our population.

I wonder if officer Brian Moore, who was recently murdered in New York, would be alive today had he not been worried about the pressure from liberal politicians and bureaucrats.

He knew that his life could be ruined by them, as was officer Darren Wilson's, if any of his actions, even justifiable ones, were construed as being politically incorrect.

The lives of our police officers should also matter, and they should matter a lot.
