Chase, drugs net shock detention

A man who led Cole County authorities on a chase after driving off from a traffic stop in September 2014 was sentenced to 120 days shock detention for charges he faced in that case.

Matthew Haulenbeek, 25, pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine, resisting arrest and driving in a careless and imprudent manner.

His sentence will run concurrent to all other sentences against him, and he is credited with time already served.

Haulenbeek had been wanted for a probation violation, with a no-bond warrant.

The pursuit began after the sheriff's department responded to the 700 block of Deer Creek Road for a call about a possible narcotics violation. The license plate of the vehicle in question was checked, and the vehicle was located and stopped at the Rainbow Market on Rainbow Drive.

The driver was later identified as Haulenbeek.

When the deputy got out of his patrol vehicle to talk with Haulenbeek, he left at a high rate of speed. The deputy chased Haulenbeek from just outside Jefferson City into rural Miller County, and Haulenbeek took many side roads in an attempt to lose the deputy.

During that chase, Haulenbeek bailed out of his car in the 100 block of Hackberry Road and ran into the woods. Because of the rural area, authorities couldn't set up a perimeter.

He was taken into custody without incident a few days later at a residence in Russellville.
