Book Review: Lincoln Child returns with 'The Forgotten Room'

"The Forgotten Room" (Doubleday), by Lincoln Child

In "The Forgotten Room," professor Jeremy Logan tackles another baffling case - that might be his last.

Lincoln Child, of the writing duo Preston & Child, has written several outstanding thrillers featuring Logan, who specializes in analyzing and solving possible supernatural mysteries.

This time, Logan is sent to investigate the suicide of one of the doctors of a prestigious think tank. He learns the doctor had started acting strangely, talking to himself and attacking his assistant. He had no history of schizophrenia, and was beloved by everyone in the organization.

Logan begins to dig, and he soon uncovers a secret room in a dormant wing of a vast estate. The equipment inside appears to be decades old, and notes left behind involve a project that is so top secret and terrifying that room has been sealed off.

Evidence shows the doctor who killed himself discovered the hidden room. Now others in the think tank are starting to exhibit strange symptoms, and Logan has begun to hear voices.

Child has written a fun and intriguing novel that reflects the best of the "mad scientist and locked room" mysteries of the early 20th century.
