Your Opinion: Stop genetic tinkering

Dear Editor:

I reference a May 8 article by Ben Spencer, science reporter for the Daily Mail: "World first as SPERM is grown in a lab for the first time: Scientists claim breakthrough could give hope to infertile men" Article quotes as follows:

"Scientists: We have made "fully-functioning' semen from genetic material"

"Kallistem laboratory in France says it will soon carry out human trials"

"Sperm cells have been grown in the laboratory for the first time, scientists have claimed, raising the prospect of a treatment for infertile men.

A company in France claims to have successfully turned scraps of genetic material into complete fully-functioning sperm - a world-first. If the breakthrough can be verified, it may prove life-changing for the tens of thousands of men around the world who cannot produce their own sperm." (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3073787/World-SPERM-grown-lab-time-Scientists-claim-breakthrough-hope-infertile-men.html).

It seems the EU is making all the inroads into this culture destructive experimentation. I refer to my letter published March 1 in the News Tribune and a Feb 4 article by Father Ed ("A Catholic priest reflects"): "Three parent babies". (http://www.tunbridgewells-ordinariate.com/blog/?p=1058).

Has it been proven over the last 200 years of inventions and knowledge that the world is now so well off that we think we can now manage the creation and manipulation of the human genetic structure? It is the epitome of arrogance and disregard for the future of humanity for any scientist to think they can emulate God by participating in these experiments to circumvent or diminish the natural male gene. The ramifications of these foolish endeavors are beyond any ones wildest imagination.

When will the over-educated fools and the foolish rich that apparently have more money than they can spend realize that their time and money could and should be better spent! For example, quoting World Hunger Statistics (http://www.statisticbrain.com/world-hunger-statistics/) there are 1.5 million children that die from starvation each year. 33 percent of the 7 billion world population (2.3 billion) is considered to be starving. It's time to stop spending untold millions tinkering with human genetics, which will create who knows what kind of future problems for humanity, and get our world's house in order first!
