Weirich hurls Jays past Smith-Cotton

SEDALIA - Jacob Weirich struck out 13 in an eight-inning one-hitter Monday to lead Jefferson City to a 5-2 defeat of Sedalia Smith-Cotton.

Weirich walked just two batters, and both of Smith-Cotton's runs were unearned.

Bret Jaegers, Grant Wood and Adam Grunden each batted 2-for-4. Jaegers had three RBI and Wood scored two runs. Travis Hennessy had a pinch-hit RBI double in the eighth inning.

The Jays scored two runs in the top of the fourth and three in the eighth.

Jefferson City (17-11) hosts Wentzville Holt on Thursday.

In the JV game, the Jays defeated Smith-Cotton 20-3.

Brandon Williams paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Tyler Bise was 2-for-2 with two RBI, and J.T. Bohlken went 2-for-4. Hayden Hirschvogel was the winning pitcher.

The Jays JV team (11-3) also plays Holt on Thursday.
