Local athletes compete in MSSU Last Chance Meet

JOPLIN - Several athletes with area ties were in action Friday in the Missouri Southern Last Chance meet.

Competing unattached in the men's hammer throw, Dan Raithel (Blair Oaks High School) unleashed a heave of 211 feet, 3 inches, good enough to beat the stadium record of Central Missouri's Jeff Kremer (Jefferson City High School).

Also competing in the hammer was Missouri S&T's John Karsten (Blair Oaks High School), and he finished fifth (162-7).

On the women's side, Pittsburg State's Kezia Martin (Jefferson City High School) was second in the triple jump (38-83/4) and third in the long jump (18-1/4).

Also competing were three Missouri Southern athletes. Allie Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth High School) was second in the javelin (86-2), Miranda Hill (Russellville High School) was second in the 1,500-meter run (6:07.04) and Melanie Bower (Linn High School) tied for third in the pole vault (11-113/4).
