Your Opinion: Response to collector on anthem etiquette

Dear Editor:

Let me begin with the following in response to Larry Vincent's response Monday May 4:

U.S. Code > Title 36 > Subtitle I > Part A > Chapter 3 > € 301 (b) Conduct During Playing. - During a rendition of the national anthem -

(1) when the flag is displayed - (A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; (B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and (C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Mr. Vincent you may want to copy the above and forward it to all the collectors.

I hardly think posting an editorial is criticizing them behind their backs. If as you said, "most of them will never read the News Tribune since they live all over the state" you are the one missing the opportunity to educate them.

I was not there to teach them how to respect America, I was on duty with a color guard. You however, were not and could have taken the opportunity. The word ignorant, which is lack of knowledge, was appropriate. If you don't know the definition, please look it up.

The military did not "teach" me to respect my country. I respected my country long before I joined. My opinion to the editor is in no way related to the Marine Corps League. It was my own personal observation and by your mere reply confirmed exactly what I said and the problem.
