Your Opinion: Government overreach

Dear Editor:

I urge everyone to read the full story about the IRS confiscating the assets of Mr. McLellan, at the site noted below. Last year the IRS confiscated over $240 million using the same tactics. Eventually it had to return half of what it took, but only after the rightful owners hired attorneys.

In the mid-'90s I was part owner of a small consulting firm. We were busy and increased our staff from three to four people. Because of the increased total weekly salaries we paid, it moved us from the classification of having to pay the feds every month to the classification where we had to pay them twice a month.

We were unaware of the classification change, but ignorance is no excuse unless you are a politician.

There was never any doubt that we had paid every cent we owed, we had just paid it monthly, not twice a month. We were fined over $900. We were punished severely for our ignorance, yet scum like Charley Rangel never had to pay a dime in penalties when he got caught cheating on his taxes.

This is just another case of big government's arrogance and overreach. Those in government will never stop taking our freedom until we force them.
