Lady Crusaders score early in OT, beat Blue Devils

They couldn't decide it in 80 minutes.

The Helias Lady Crusaders then needed slightly more than 80 seconds to win it.

"We feel like we were better team, it was nice that we came through and got the goal," Helias coach Brad Dempsey said after the Lady Crusaders defeated the Quincy (Ill.) Blue Devils 1-0 in overtime on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the 179 Soccer Park.

On the game-winner, Lauren Alexander of Helias passed the ball toward the Quincy net. Kayla Yanskey of the Lady Crusaders took a shot that was stopped, but Sarah Pierle was there to knock home the rebound just 1:32 into the extra period.

It is the second varsity goal of the season for Pierle.

"She has the desire to get to the ball and do something with it," Dempsey said. "She's done a lot for us on the JV level and developed into getting some time on the varsity.

"She proved that she can play at this level."

Both teams had good opportunities to score in regulation.

Quincy had a shot at a wide-open net go high midway through the first half.

"That was a mistake on our part," Dempsey said.

Helias then had a shot of its own bounce off the crossbar later in the half.

"An expectation of ours is to play 80 minutes of excellent soccer and we did that today," Dempsey said.

Ashley Rehagen got the shutout in goal for Helias.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Crusaders.

"We just went through one of the most brutal stretches anyone could ask for," Dempsey said. "This one should build our confidence. We have been through a lot and we should use those experiences to our advantage."

The Lady Crusaders (8-12-1) will close out the regular season with a pair of home games this week. On Tuesday, Helias will play Camdenton for Senior Night, then will host Hickman on Thursday.

Helias and Camdenton are the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in the four-team Class 3 District 13 Tournament, which starts Monday, May 18, in Camdenton. Helias will open against fourth-seeded Warrensburg, while Camdenton will face third-seeded Harrisonville.

The district title game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20.

Helias was a 2-0 winner against Quincy in Saturday's JV game that was shortened to one half. Megan Kerr and Yanskey scored for the Lady Crusaders, while Pierle had an assist.
