Our Opinion: Alert operators drive safe boating season

News Tribune editorial

As temperatures rise in Central Missouri, the waterways beckon.

In connection with the observance of National Safe Boating Week today through May 22, the Missouri Highway Patrol emphasizes respect for safety and courtesy for fellow water enthusiasts.

The first order of business is preparing and inspecting a boat, particularly if it has remained out of the water for an extended period of time.

"Weather, time and other elements may affect the readiness of your boat," the patrol said in a news release. It added: "The patrol's marine operations troopers are available to inspect the required equipment on your boat and, at your request, to make sure you're in compliance with state law."

The law requires personal flotation devices for each person on board. Although children under age 7 are required to wear them while on board, the patrol recommends all occupants wear life jackets.

"Life jackets are now lighter, less obtrusive and more comfortable than ever before." the patrol said. "The new inflatable life jackets allow mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing or paddling, and are much cooler in the warmer weather."

When it comes to boat operations, sobriety and safety go together.

"The concerns we all associate with an intoxicated driver, whether in a vehicle or a boat, are compounded by other environmental factors involved with boating," said Col. J. Bret Johnson, patrol superintendent. "The wave action, extended exposure to the sun, and the wind all cause what is known as boater fatigue. When alcohol is combined with boater fatigue, reaction time and the overall thought process are slowed substantially."

Waterways are a source of enjoyment and recreation, but they also can be dangerous.

In 2014, the patrol reported 15 fatalities and 101 injuries connected with 179 boating accidents.

The state's waterways are shared by boaters, water sports enthusiast, shoreline property owners and others.

Contribute to a safe boating season in Missouri by practicing courtesy to others, respect for state laws and attentive operation.
