Your Opinion: No federal funds for body cameras

Dear Editor:

Once again the nanny state federal government, populated by politicians much more interested in getting re-elected, and feathering their own nests, than doing what is best for our nation, spends money the government doesn't have.

The DOJ is starting a "pilot" program to give away $20 million for body cameras. (How much will this program cost us if it gets out of the pilot stage?) Having police wear body cameras may be a good idea, but it is one that should be decided, and funded, locally.

It is handy that the DOJ has a slush fund that includes $20 million for body cameras. I wonder about the total size of their slush fund; hundreds of millions, billions? Is this an indication of how much "fat" there is in every federal bureaucracy?

Why should my grandchild and great-grandchild be forced to pay interest, forever, on the money that will be borrowed for this program?

This is just another example of funding projects with "free money from the magic money tree in DC."

Locals, those who will benefit from the program, should fund it locally, instead of lobbying some glad-handing politicians to hand them money.

If I had a choice in the matter I would not support having my taxes raised, nor having the feds borrow more money, to pay for body cameras for police in St. Louis, Kansas City, Baltimore, etc.

Do you support piling more debt on future generations so that the federal government can continue its glad handing?

If you support buying police body cameras for some other municipality, start raising funds on GoFundMe, or some other online fundraising site.
