College Track: Karsten helps Miners to crown

LIBERTY - The Missouri S&T Miners rolled to their second straight title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships that ran Friday and Saturday at William Jewell College.

The Miners racked up 174 points to easily outdistance second-place Lewis, which had 105.

John Karsten (Blair Oaks High School) helped the Miners claim the title by finishing third in the discus (151-10), fifth in the hammer throw (159-9) and sixth in the shot put (48-83/4).

Missouri S&T was fourth with 71 points on the women's side, which was won by Indianapolis with 181.33.

Katlyn Meier (Vienna High School) of the Miners won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.65, a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships that also broke her own school record.

Meier was also sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.32) and part of the Miners' 4x400-meter relay team that came in third (3:53.04) and a member on the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fourth (48.34).
