Girls Soccer: Lady Jays win, Helias falls in TOC

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Jefferson City Lady Jays got their first win in the Tournament of Champions on Friday, while the Helias Lady Crusaders suffered another loss.

After dropping their opener Thursday in the Heartland Lodge bracket of the event, the Lady Jays bounced back to claim a 1-0 win against Waukee, Iowa, on Friday.

Jefferson City (9-4-3) will play Liberty at 11:30 a.m. today in the fifth-place game.

Also competing in the top bracket of the event was Helias, which fell for the second straight day, this time by a 4-2 score to Liberty.

The Lady Crusaders trailed 2-0 at halftime and gave up the first goal of the second half.

After Emma Wyrick scored an unassisted goal, Kayla Yanskey scored on a penalty kick to get Helias within 3-2. But Liberty got an insurance goal to salt away the win.

Helias (7-10-1) will play Waukee at 11:30 a.m. today for seventh place.

Jefferson City and Helias will play Wednesday. The JV game with start at 5 p.m. at the 179 Soccer Park, with the varsity game to follow around 6:45 p.m.
