Lincoln women open outdoor track season strong

ST. CHARLES - The Lincoln women's track and field team opened its outdoor season in fine fashion Saturday, posting eight victories at the Lindenwood Invitational.

The event was held at the site that will play host to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this spring.

The Blue Tigers dominated the sprint events, particularly the 100-meter dash, where five Lincoln athletes finished in the top six.

Janae Johnson won the race in a time of 12.01, while Kimberly Bailey was the runner-up (12.37) and Keja Christie took third (12.42). Also for the Blue Tigers, Adewumi Ademuwagun was fifth (12.88) and Erika Spencer was sixth (13.08).

Johnson also won the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 24.68. Bailey again was the runner-up, posting a mark of 25.55. Christie finished fourth (26.33) and Spencer placed seventh (26.85).

The field was also crowded with Blue Tigers in the 400-meter dash, won by Lincoln's Yanique Ellington in 56.87. Willomena Williams took second (57.02), Lovan Palmer finished third (57.82) and Ebony Rose took fifth (1:01.19).

Monique Thompson was a double-winner for Lincoln, taking first in the 800-meter run (2:15.24) and 1,500-meter run (4:54.25).

Thompson also helped the 4x400-meter relay team take first in 3:53.18, teaming with Williams, Ebony Rose and Bailey.

Lincoln dominated the 400-meter hurdles. Ladonna Richards won in 1:03.02 and was followed by Nadia Harriott (fourth, 1:08.97), Palmer (fifth, 1:09.68) and Rose (seventh, 1:13.41).

Lincoln's other victory came in the 4x100-meter relay, where the foursome of Ademuwagun, Bailey, Christie and Richards took first in 48.05.

Also for the Blue Tigers, Ademuwagun was second in the long jump (17-51/4), Jonelle Campbell was second in the triple jump (36-71/2) and third in the long jump (15-81/4), Harriott finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.30), Naomi Bryant was fourth in the triple jump (32-41/4) and seventh in the long jump (14-41/2), and Akeeba Rose was seventh in the 1,500-meter run (5:33.81) and eighth in the 800-meter run (2:42.02).

Lindenwood's Bre Zanders (Helias High School) won the discus with a heave of 129-7, while Truman State's Kara Wehmeyer (Calvary Lutheran High School) was second in the javelin (87-6).

On the men's side, Lincoln won three events at the Triangular.

The Blue Tigers swept the hurdles, with Darran Hunter winning the 110-meter event in 15.39 and Winston Edwards taking the 400-meter race in 54.58. Hunter placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (56.84) and Alva Henry was fifth (59.73).

Lincoln's other victory came in the triple jump, where Owen Smith took first with a leap of 46-71/4.

Roger Blake turned in a pair of second-place results, finishing as the runner-up in the 200-meter dash (22.34) and 400-meter dash (50.33).

Smith was second in the javelin (150-6), while Hampton Mayson was fourth (130-6) and Edwards was fifth (129-7). Mayson also came in second in the discus (140-6) and sixth in the shot put (40-4).

In addition, Jakiel David was fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.24) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.89), Grant took fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.83), Wesley Best was sixth in the 400-meter dash (52.34), Khorey Spalding was sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.40), Christian Thompson was eighth in the 100-meter dash (12.01) and Nicholus Grant was eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.24).

The 4x400-meter relay team of Grant, Best, Henry and Hunter finished second in 3:21.91.
