Your Opinion: Join activities opposing the death penalty

Dear Editor:

This past year (2014 to present) the state of Missouri has executed 12 people. Whether these people are guilty or innocent, incompetent or competent is not the point and avoids an underlying issue that is troubling: we executed 12 people.

How is this acceptable? Do we teach children to seek vengeance? Are we not bothered when we hear of executions in other countries? What other developed society has this uncivilized policy of punishment? Countries that continue to support the death penalty are in a significant minority in the world. We are in the company of the governments of Afghanistan, China, Botswana, Nigeria, Vietnam and others. Please think about this public policy. Killing someone behind closed doors does not make it right.

On April 14 we are scheduled to execute yet another person. If this concerns you, please attend a vigil on that day. We gather and stand in silence outside Governor Nixon's office in the Capitol from noon-1 p.m. We gather again from 5-6 p.m. on the sidewalk between the Capitol and the Supreme Court building to stand in protest. There is a prayer service in St. Peter's chapel from 4:30-5 p.m. prior to the vigil. Let your voice be heard.

Punish and keep the public safe? Yes.

Execute? No.
