Churches turn the other cheek

Small Westboro group largely ignored

Kansas-based Westboro Baptist's protests at four local churches this weekend were uneventful, with no arrests, Jefferson City police said.

Westboro said the Palm Sunday weekend events were to "picket the Babel Buildings of Jefferson City." On Saturday, Westboro picketed at First Methodist Church. On Sunday morning, the group went to Concord Baptist Church, St. Peter Catholic Church and First Assembly of God.

Lt. Pat McCutchen said he followed the group to all three churches Sunday morning.

"I think there were five of them - four adults and one child - and about a dozen counter-protesters, and they all kind of did their thing. The church people were pretty patient with everything," he said.

The churches advised their members not to engage the Westboro group, which is known for its protests of U.S. soldiers' funerals.

"We really didn't have much interaction with either group," McCutchen said. "They did their thing and we were in the area to make sure nothing else happened."
