Your Opinion: Veterans need Medicaid

Dear Editor:

In an article entitled "Veterans to push Missouri Medicaid expansion" published on Nov. 18, reporter Virginia Young covered what's at stake for Missouri veterans who are uninsured.

There are approximately 30,000 veterans in Missouri who are uninsured. Not to mention their 22,000 family members. The passage of Medicaid expansion in Missouri would mean that 14,500 veterans and 7,800 veterans' family members would be eligible for coverage.

Veterans have answered the call of duty and have served our country with courage and dedication. Their lives are made even more difficult when they return home and do not have access to critical mental and physical health services. Nationally, nearly half of uninsured veterans and 35.5 percent of their family members have incomes below 138 percent of the federal poverty level ("FPL").

As a veteran of the United States Army, I am dismayed to find that 459 veterans in Mike Kehoe's Senate district do not have health care coverage because they fall in the gap between people that have Medicaid and those that can afford medical coverage. These veterans have to choose between health coverage and making ends meet.

We need health care coverage for all veterans with Medicaid expansion.
