Man injured after falling from balcony in Jefferson City

A man was injured seriously early Friday when he reportedly fell through a railing on a third-story balcony in Jefferson City.

Police and ambulance crews responded shortly after midnight to an apartment building in the 900 block of East High Street.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to a local hospital and then flown by helicopter to a Columbia hospital.

Because the victim's name was not available, no condition information was available, either.

Janice McMillan, Jefferson City's Planning and Protective Services director, said Friday afternoon that interim repairs were made to the railing and the property owner was instructed to make more permanent repairs.

Officers responding to the initial emergency call discovered a broken railing at the scene, but the circumstances of the fall and cause of the damage were being investigated.

However, police said Friday afternoon the situation was a "code-enforcement" matter, not a criminal one.
