Houdashelt claims title at 149 pounds

ST. LOUIS - Drake Houdashelt of Missouri captured the NCAA wrestling title at 149 pounds Saturday night, defeating David Habat of Edinboro 3-1 in extra time in the championship match.

It is the first career title for Houdashelt, a senior who was sixth in 2013 and fifth in 2014 and a native of O'Fallon.

"It's kind of nice to come back to St. Louis and finish my career off especially like I just did," Houdashelt said. "It's unreal."

He is the sixth Missouri wrestler to win a national individual title.

Missouri finished fourth in the final team standings with 73.5 points. Ohio State was first at 102, followed by Iowa at 84 and Edinboro at 75.5.

Earlier Saturday, Missouri teammates Alan Waters and J'Den Cox wrapped up their seasons with All-American finishes in the tournament.

Waters took third at 125, while Cox was fifth at 197.

Waters, a senior, finished his Missouri career with 136 victories.

In addition, Missouri's Lavion Mayes, and Willie Miklus also placed in their respective weight classes.

Mayes was seventh at 141, while Miklus finished seventh at 184.
