Your Opinion: Interfaith alliance reaffirms tenets

Dear Editor:

The Capital Area Interfaith Alliance (CAIA) which represents the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Unitarian Universalist faiths, expresses our great shock and sadness at the recent, domestic and international tragic events. As people of faith and members of CAIA, we proclaim and affirm the following three tenets:

• We affirm the value of every human life and individual's right to express their faith in meaningful and positive ways.

• We respect all faiths and do not condone instigation or violence on the part of persons of any faith or of those who express no faith, toward any individual or group due to their religious belief.

• We seek unity in the midst of our diversity. We believe that this is only achieved through interfaith dialogue, focusing on things that we hold in common while seeking to understand the unique features of each faith.

We urge all members of our community to enter into dialogue with, and seek to build meaningful relationships with, people of other faiths. In doing so, not only will stereotypes be challenged and distortions corrected, but our community will stand stronger and united as we work for a more peaceful future.
