Cole County OKs contracts for street, stormwater improvements

The Cole County Commission signed an agreement Tuesday for design work on a stormwater and street improvement project for an area south of Jefferson City off U.S. 54.

The $65,195 contract with Engineering Surveys and Services will look at The Crossroads, Southtown Estates and Rustic Oaks subdivisions which encompass an area that includes parts of Monticello Road, Greenbrier Drive, Dewberry Drive, Horseshoe Road, Sycamore Lane and Rustic Lane.

Along with stormwater improvements, curb and gutter work will be done as needed along with milling and asphalt work.

The design work will take about a year to complete along with getting easements, if needed.

Work on the project will start in 2017 or 2018.

The total cost of the project has not been determined. It will be paid for through the county's half-cent sales tax.

The commission also awarded a contract to Sam Gaines Construction for $564,989 for the Pioneer Trail School Safe Routes to Schools Project. That's $90,000 under estimates.

Design work on the project began in June 2013. This project is a Safe Routes to Schools project that was awarded a $250,000 grant from MoDOT.

The project limits begin on Business 50 West at Pioneer Trail Drive and end on Rainbow Drive at Hunters Run. Work should start around the beginning of April.

Also approved was the final closeout change order on the Business 50 West improvement project.

The $412,000 change order brought the final cost for the project to more than $4.3 million.

Public works officials said the majority of the money for the change order was for subgrade stabilization.

The project was funded by a half-cent capital improvements sales tax funds. The improvements included an updated roadway complete with curb and gutter, new pavement, drainage inlets and sidewalks, and will be compatible with development that will continue to occur, serving the area for many years.
