Two pairs in poker? Somewhat common. Two pairs of calves, not so common.

Two cows gave birth to twins on the same day at Jerry and Ruth Wilbers' farm in Callaway County about three weeks ago.

What's even more unusual is that the five-acre farming operation at 5012 Glover's Ford Road only has about 46 heads of livestock in total.

"It's interesting," Jerry Wilbers said. "Twins have never happened to us and to have two sets of twins in one day is pretty unusual for us, and I'd say it's pretty unusual for anyone of this size operation."

All four of the calves have survived, although in both cases the mother abandoned one of her calves. That's not uncommon, Jerry Wilbers said, perhaps because the mother not thinking she has enough milk to feed both calves.

Wilbers and his wife are bottle-feeding the two that were abandoned.

These four calves will be among the 24 that they expect this year.

The Wilbers will raise them to about 10 months, then sell them, he said.

Wilbers said he's getting the same question from everyone he knows: "They want to know what kind of bull I've got."
