Lincoln softball rocked against Northeastern State

The Northeastern State RiverHawks racked up 28 runs on 38 hits while sweeping a softball doubleheader with Lincoln on Sunday at Lincoln Field.

The RiverHawks got 14 of those hits while taking the opener 13-4, then pounded out 24 more in a 15-8 win in the nightcap.

Lincoln actually took a lead in both games, but couldn't hold on.

In the lidlifter, the Blue Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the first on the strength of RBI singles by Sam Kircher and Macie Kinsey. Megan Heimbaugh scored on the first hit, while Kircher came in on the next one.

Northeastern State took control of the game with a five-run top of the second, then made it 6-2 in the third.

Lincoln closed to within 6-4 when Kircher smacked a home run, her third of the season, that scored Allyson Corry.

But that was it for the Blue Tigers, while the RiverHawks scored two in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to end it.

Spencer Silva was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, while Heimbaugh ended up going 3-for-4 with a double. Kircher was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Kinsey had a single, double and one RBI.

Kinsey started and took the loss, giving up five earned runs on five hits and three walks in three innings. She struck out three. Madison Ragar followed and gave up eight runs (five earned) in four innings. She walked four and struck out three.

In the second game, Lincoln jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings, but gave up five runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth while falling 15-8.

The Blue Tigers scored three runs in the first inning. The first came when Corry came home on an error, with the next two coming home on a single by Silva that scored Avery Myers and Kircher.

Northeastern State, which had a whopping 24 hits in the win, got its first run in the top of the third. Lincoln got it back in the bottom of that frame when Corry scored on a passed ball.

After the RiverHawks' two big innings gave them a 15-4 lead, the Blue Tigers got their final two runs in the fifth. Myers had a two-run single, Kinsey had an RBI double and Kassidey Borland had a sacrifice fly.

Cory ended up going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Meyers and Silva had one hit and two RBI each. Kircher rapped out a pair of hits, including a double.

Silva was the losing pitcher, as she worked the first 4 1/3 innings. She allowed nine earned runs on 16 hits and two walks.

Lauren Stamp followed and gave up six runs, although just two were earned, on six hits while getting just one out. Ragar worked the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits while not giving up a run.

Northeastern State improved to 12-12 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, while Lincoln fell to 1-16 and 1-7.

The Blue Tigers will return to action with a nonconference doubleheader with Quincy starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lincoln Field.
