Life in prison sentence for Moniteau County murder

A California, Mo., man was sentenced to life in prison without parole for pleading guilty to shooting and killing his son-in-law in September 2014.

Donald Bateman , 69, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Antone Johnson, 43, who died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Officers were called to 505 W. Main St. in California for a disturbance. They found Bateman in a room with a .38 caliber pistol in his lap. Johnson had been shot.

Bateman is disabled, a double-amputee in a wheelchair.

Authorities were told by a witness that Bateman had been drinking before the incident. While he and Johnson were working on a water heater, an argument ensued, ending with Bateman shooting Johnson twice after retrieving a gun.

Johnson was transported to St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, where he later died.

Bateman later told police that Johnson had threatened to beat him up. When he came back into the room with a gun, Bateman said Johnson rushed him, and he fired at Johnson.
