Jefferson City sales tax receipts surge ahead

Jefferson City sales tax receipts have surged ahead of projections in March, with year-end totals also projected to be higher than budgeted.

March sales tax receipts, which reflect the January reporting period, came in ahead of projections in all three categories. The city's 1 percent general sales tax came in $170,422 ahead of March projections, leading to a projected year-end surplus of $311,592.

The half-cent capital improvement sales tax came in $88,044 ahead of projections and total year-end surplus is projected to be $157,926.

The half-cent parks sales tax also came in $88,036 ahead of projections, with the year-end surplus projected to be $158,609.

Because of the increase in sales tax revenue, the city's revenue forecast model is projecting the 2015 budget will end roughly $437,000 ahead of total revenue projections.

At a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Tuesday, department director Bill Lockwood said if the financial trends continue, the department will be "well over what we projected budget-wise at the end of the year."
