MANRRS chapter at LU gains region honors

The Lincoln University chapter of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) has earned 2015 Region 4 Chapter of the Year honors. The recognition means the organization will go to the national MANRRS conference March 26-27 in Houston, Texas.

The Lincoln University chapter has 21 members and is advised by Julius Moody, who is the USDA 1890 program liaison for Lincoln University.

The Chapter of the Year institutions are judged on their organizational activities from the previous calendar year.

In 2014, MANRRS participated in numerous campus and community service projects including the Missouri River Relief Clean program; a community garden program in St. Louis; and the CROP walk, a faith-based walk aimed at bringing awareness to hunger within local communities. The chapter adopted recycling efforts on the Lincoln University campus by collecting recyclable items from campus buildings, as well as during larger campus events.

In addition to these activities, LU MANRRS was awarded a grant to help in the restoration of the honey bee population, regionally and globally. Funding from the grant was used to establish and maintain a native plant pollinator garden and apiary. The ongoing project will be funded through fees and donations, which will be used for removal of pest colonies that could affect the plant or honeybee population.
