Your Opinion: Squandered tax money

Dear Editor:

Please convey my thanks to Madeleine Leroux for conveying the humor in the report of the Chamber's squandering of $300,000 of tax money.

Their squirming is hilarious. The attempt to rationalize their failure by claiming credit for all expansion of JC's businesses in recent years is wonderful. It only shows their desperation to hang on to and even increase their take.

Business people like to speak of the "bottom line." The bottom line here is the Chamber cannot show or even claim a part in the expansion of businesses but claim in a convoluted way that they are responsible for $600,000 input to Jefferson City. Only the gullible or the prejudiced will buy that. We can expect mayoral candidates Scrivner and Tergin to tout this fallacy. However the taxpayers should laugh the Chamber out of the room.

The desperation and reaching of the Chamber is typical of their campaigns for county zoning and transformation tax. That are a lot of generalities and half truths with no substance. Only the fact that both the County Commission and City Council are full of Chamber members can save the tax grab by the Chamber.

The bottom line is that the Chamber has only produced sales tax proposals for ridiculous projects that will put Jefferson City in a financial bind for a generation. Do we need the same thinking that produced the Ellinger Money Sponge Jail to continue to raid our pockets?
