College Softball: Cougars win bracket

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Columbia College softball team won its final four games in the Gulf Coast Invitational, helping the Cougars take the Silver Bracket Championship in the event.

The Cougars opened with a 7-5 loss to Brenau (Ga.) on Friday.

Allyson Metz (Jefferson City High School) had one hit and one RBI for Columbia.

Paxton Welch (Helias High School) took the loss, scattering 10 hits in a complete-game effort. She allowed six earned runs and did not walk a batter while striking out four.

Later that day, Columbia lost to William Carey by a 6-3 score.

The Cougars opened Saturday's play with a 4-1 loss to Reinhardt as Metz rapped out two hits and drove in one run.

Columbia closed out Saturday with a win against Cumberland (Tenn.) by a tally of 10-2.

Metz racked up three hits and four RBI in the victory, while Welch was the winning pitcher. She threw a seven-hitter and allowed two earned runs while walking one and striking out one.

The Cougars won three straight on Sunday, starting with a 3-0 blanking of Campbellsville (Ky.).

Welch twirled a four-hitter, striking out four while walking just one. Metz had one hit and drove in one run.

Next up was a 3-2 win for the Cougars against Houston-Victoria.

Columbia wrapped up things with a 9-4 victory against Freed-Hardeman as Tiffany Urwiler (School of the Osage High School) and Welch combined on a three-hitter.

Urwiler worked the first four innings to get the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. She struck out two and walked one. Welch finished up and did not allow a hit or run in the final three innings, striking out one.

Metz rapped out two hits, while Paige Kleffner (Blair Oaks High School) scored a run as a pinch runner.

The Cougars are now 5-5 on the season.
