OA wants to review prison's nomination to national register

The nomination, approved by the city's Historic Preservation Commission, for the Missouri State Penitentiary to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places was removed from the state's approving agency's agenda in May.

At its June meeting Tuesday, the commission learned that the state's Office of Administration had requested the nomination be held back for further review.

City officials hope the nomination will be on the Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's November agenda.

In other business, the commission:

• Approved a demolition permit for 516 Boonville Road, a brick home built in 1951, which will be replaced with a new residential building.

• Released four adjacent properties, all of which are listed among the city's vacant and abandoned buildings, at the corner of Lafayette and East McCarty streets for demolition. Commissioners showed disappointment in the loss of 323 Lafayette St., and hoped materials might be salvaged from all properties for reuse. The other sites are 311 and 315 Lafayette St. and 707 E. McCarty St.

• Reviewed two applications for the Community Development Block Grant code deficiency program at 500 E. Ashley and 118 N. Polk streets.
