Cantwell takes second at USA Track and Field Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Christian Cantwell captured a second-place finish Sunday in the shot put at the USA Track and Field Championships hosted by Sacramento State.

Cantwell, the former Missouri Tiger and Eldon Mustang, saved his best for last, posting his top mark of 71 feet on his final attempt of the competition.

That was just eight inches behind the winning mark posted by Joe Kovacs of Nike, who got his winning heave of 71-8 on his fourth attempt.

Sacramento State was also hosting the junior nationals in conjunction with the senior event, and Friday, Landon Bartel came in second in the junior men's high jump.

Raithel, a former Southern Boone Eagle currently competing for the University of Nebraska, cleared 7 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

He then missed all three of his attempts at 7-2 1/2, which was the winning mark cleared by Randall Cunningham of Southern California on his final attempt.

Cunningham then passed at 7-3 3/4 before missing all three of his attempts at 7-5 1/4, which would have tied the meet record in the junior event set in 1989 by Kevin Clements of Illinois State. The American junior record is 7-7, set in 2002 by Andra Manson.

Also at senior nationals, Terrel Cotton, a former Lincoln Blue Tiger, narrowly missed making the finals in the men's 200-meter dash.

Cotton started out by finishing second in Heat 5 with a time of 20.16 in Saturday's prelims, then came in 10th in Sunday's semifinals. He posted a mark of 20.60 to finish fifth in Heat 1 of the semifinals, missing being one of the eight finalists by .06 seconds.
