New bridge in suburban St. Louis opens Monday

WELDON SPRING, Mo. (AP) - A new bridge in suburban St. Louis will open in time for the morning commute on Monday.

The new span of the Daniel Boone Bridge will carry eastbound traffic over the Missouri River from St. Charles County into St. Louis County on Interstate 64. Construction on the $111 million project began in January 2013.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says up to two lanes of traffic will be closed on eastbound I-64 starting at 6 p.m. Friday, and will remain closed through the weekend.

MoDOT says the new span will open by 5 a.m. Monday.

With the opening, the existing eastbound bridge will be closed for rehabilitation, reopening later this year as the westbound span. The current westbound bridge, built in the 1930s, will be demolished early next year.
