Fireworks law, safety stressed

The Jefferson City Fire Department is reminding residents to be safe during the Fourth of July holiday.

Fireworks are illegal to discharge within city limits, and the department is encouraging residents to enjoy the public fireworks display downtown as part of the Salute to America celebration on July 4.

For people who live outside city limits and in areas where they are allowed to use fireworks, the department is asking people to keep in mind the following safety guidelines:

• Never allow small children near fireworks while being discharged.

• Supervise older children at all times when fireworks are being discharged.

• Never point projectiles toward structures or people.

• Avoid dry wooded areas and fields for projectiles.

• Small children should not play with sparklers as even the smallest firework can cause injury.

• If fireworks fail to ignite, leave it alone and keep back; do not try to relight it.
