Ameren helps elderly, poor keep cool

Donates 50 air conditioners to Samaritan Center

As part of its Air Conditioner Giveaway, Ameren Missouri is donating 50 Energy Star-certified window air conditioners to the Samaritan Center, which will distribute them to eligible low-income and elderly customers.

This year, through its energy efficiency programs, Ameren Missouri is including a four-pack of 60-watt-equivalent compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Samaritan Center Deputy Director Ben DeFeo said this is something they regularly do in cooperation with Ameren.

Ameren officials said this is the 10th year they've done this program.

"Those wanting an air conditioner have to be Ameren customers and must show a health need or have children with health needs," he said. "They can't just give them to anyone."

DeFeo said the need continues to grow.

"Those with energy concerns continue to come to us and we never have enough funds for this," he said. "With food costs going up, this just adds to needs."

For those who need help in paying energy bills, Ameren officials encourage those customers to call 1-800-552-7583.
