Five dozen men wearing heels - and walking in the rain Tuesday night - helped Jefferson City's Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS) raise nearly $20,000.

The money is used "to support emergency shelter and counseling for victims of domestic abuse and sexualized violence," RACS volunteer Gretchen Nicholson said.

The money was raised through the "Walk A Mile In Her Shoes" and barbecue event at Memorial Park, where 367 meals were served.

Nicholson said 77 men had registered to be in the walk, and 61 came in spite of Tuesday's rain.

Small signs posted around the Memorial Pavilion explained RACS' need for money.

In 2014, there were 223 new shelter residents, who stayed a total of 6,805 bed nights.

RACS served 10,945 meals.

The agency provided 1,655 individual counseling sessions and 174 group sessions.

It received 1,285 hotline calls and 613 advocate calls.
