Our Opinion: Donations extend services, reach through grants

Giving and receiving are components of any charitable contribution.

Previously in this forum, we have encouraged donations. Today, we want to highlight some of the worthwhile programs and activities your contributions have made possible.

Our readers are aware that we have championed the work of the United Way of Central Missouri and its partner agencies and programs.

At a recent event to reveal the fall campaign goal, $1.8 million, and campaign co-chairs, Barbara Prasad and Matt Tollerson, the recipients of one-time grants also were announced.

Donors make these grants possible when contributions exceed allocations to agencies. Decisions regarding partner agencies, allocations and grant selections all are made by United Way volunteers.

All 15 grant recipients are deserving, but let's highlight a few.

• The Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association received $11,300 for its transitions program.

The program is designed to smooth the often-difficult transition from foster care to adult life when a person ages out of the foster care program.

• Capital City CASA, received $900 for a projector and shredder. This grant, although among the smallest, will help immensely to support the work of volunteers who serve CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates.

These volunteers advocate on behalf of what is best for a child who become entangled in the legal labyrinth of adult court filings and actions.

• The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, received $10,000 for the Buddy Pack program to serve 56 more children in the Camdenton R-3 School District.

The area United Way receives donations and serves agencies in five Central Missouri counties, and this grant will help feed children and extend the reach of services.

The one-time grants this year totaled $116,000 and were provided to both United Way partner and non-partner agencies.

Ann Bax, area United Way president, said: "We're changing the lives of people right here in our own backyards, and we could not do that without you."

Your contribution not only helped change lives, it helped serve both United Way partners and non-partners, and enhanced the reach of health and human services in a multi-county territory.

Well done, Central Missouri.
