About 60 years ago, two storefronts went up in the west end area.

Originally numbered as 2001-2003 W. Main St., the June Golden Hammer recipient, West Main Pizza, today has an address of 1931-1933 W. Main St.

The Historic City of Jefferson selected this property for the revival of an existing, older property.

Researcher Deborah Goldammer found Washington Irving and Mary Etta Dexter owned the property likely as farm land before 1947. The Dexters lived at 1923 W. Main St., which was the farthest listing west until Dix Road at the time.

The property was sold to Cletus and Myrtle Pope in 1947. Pope operated Pope Drug Store at 131 E. High St., and the couple lived at 146 Boonville Road, just around the corner.

"They do not appear to have done anything with the property, as there is still no listing in the directories," Goldammer said.

Robert and Dorothy Livingston bought the land in 1955. Livingston was a building contractor, living at 415 Meir Drive, not far away. He built several service stations across the city for Gulf Oil.

Goldammer wondered if the Livingstons' purchase wasn't at first to build Johnny's Service Station next door, at the corner of Dix Road and West Main Street.

The Hall and Sutton Pharmacy opened at 2003 W. Main St. that same year. Oscar and Verna Sutton lived nearby on West Circle and owned the pharmacy in the Medical Arts Building downtown with Russell and Elva Hall.

Sutton opened his own shop at 504 E. High St. by 1957, when the Golden Hammer location was Hall's Pharmacy. Hall owned the Medical Arts Building shop, as well as another at 515 E. High St.

Russell Hays bought the property in 1959 and incorporated with Hall Realty in 1960.

Hobbyland occupied 2001 W. Main St. by 1957 and later housed the U.S. Post Office substation and a Rapid Package Delivery office.

At some point, the pharmacy expanded into both locations and remained Hall's Pharmacy until 1980, when Crown Drug took over, then Super D Drugs.

It stood vacant through the mid-1980s, except for a time when it was a Billiard Factory and Showroom and a Pizza Unlimited.

JC Health Foods moved into 1931 W. Main St., staying from 1987-98, then Concord Custom Cleaners moved into the 1933 side around 1991 until 2006.

JCTV Radio and TV Repair occupied 1931 W. Main St. in 2000 and became Reinsch's TV in 2003. The television store moved into 1933 W. Main St. in 2006, allowing Carr Image Labs Computer, Muggsy's Brew Shop and Price is Right Thrift Store to each take a turn in 1931.

Hall Realty sold the property in 2005 to Mark and Cristina Herron, who sold to Shriji Inc. in 2013.

Current owners Charles and Jessica Christiansen, who lived nearby on Hayselton Drive, bought the property soon afterward.

The Christiansens renovated the buildings, which now house West Main Pizza and Charles Christiansen Shelter Insurance Office.
