2015 Relay for Life raises $165,000

The American Cancer Society's Jefferson City Relay for Life raised $165,000, as of the Closing Ceremony at 2 a.m. Saturday.

That's $206.25 raised for each of the 800 registered participants, both individuals on teams and survivors.

Or, calculated another way, that's $2,357.143 for each of the 70 teams that participated.

Last year's relay raised $230,000, the News Tribune reported a year ago.

"Our goal is always to raise close to or more than the previous year," Molly Steinbeck, the Relay For Life community manager, said in an email Sunday. "We still have until the end of the year to meet our goal, and there are many fundraisers that will still take place through the end of 2015."

Relay For Life is the Cancer Society's annual event that helps raise money for cancer research.

There are separate relays scheduled in communities throughout the region and the nation.

Jefferson City's Relay for Life began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at 2 a.m. Saturday.

"Each event is (the community's) own," Steinbeck said. "We don't combine their totals.

"Part of the proceeds from each community event stay local in that community to serve patients in that specific county - in our case Cole County."

In the past, the Relay for Life has run 12 hours, from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. the next morning.

The 2015 relay was the first with shorter hours, ending at 2 a.m. instead of 6.

Steinbeck said the change was made "in hopes of keeping more teams there all night and having a larger attendance at closing ceremonies. Last year, many teams expressed interest in ending our event earlier so we tried it this year.

"I think it went really well - we had more people stay all night and participate through the end of the event."
