Your Opinion: Media ignores bowling tourney

Dear Editor:

Jefferson City was privileged to host the Missouri State USBC Youth Bowling tournament at Capital Bowl over five weekends, bringing approximately 1,000 youth to our city to bowl in this prestigious event. This event brought over $250,000 in revenue to our city with the help of many tireless volunteers, the Capital Bowl staff and our local Convention and Visitors Bureau.

I am amazed and disappointed that the residents are unaware of the many thousands of dollars spent in hotels, restaurants and shopping venues because of the lack of media coverage.

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau notified the media when the event began in April and personally called the last weekend of the tournament May 19.

I would think an event of this caliber bringing this type of revenue to our city would merit some mention. Many of the hotels, banks and restaurants were very supportive in welcoming these youth from all over the state by supplying items for each bowler. These bowlers from age 5 to high scholars brought parents, grandparents and friends staying in our hotels and dining in our restaurants, some even touring the Capitol and Missouri State Penitentiary.

I am extremely disappointed that this information was not disseminated in our community.
