LU to host 3rd alternative agriculture field day

Lincoln University's Cooperative Extension and Research program is hosting the third annual Alternative (organic) Agriculture Field Day from 1:30-5:30 p.m. today at the Busby Farm, 5124 Goller Road.

Three workshops also will be conducted from 9 a.m.-noon, oninternal parasites of sheep, goats and cattle; organic vegetable production; and organic pest management.

"We are excited to continue with this field day. We will show small farmers how to use inexpensive technology and other information to increase their income," Farm Manager Chris Boeckmann said, in a news release. "Busby farm is the largest certified organic research farm in Missouri.

"This year we're going to demonstrate solar-powered irrigation and some other sustainable approaches to farming. And we'll be talking about cover crops."

The field day is open to the public at no cost, but there is a $10 fee to attend a workshop, which includes lunch and materials for workshop attendees.

The farm is located about five miles southwest of Jefferson City, on Goller Road just east of U.S. 54 (Monticello Road goes to the west at the same intersection).

Funding for the event is provided from grants by the United States Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Extension Integrated Pest Management and the Ceres Trust.
