A Fulton man who recently formed the Missouri Confederate American Flag Supporters (MoCAFS) is organizing a Fulton-to-Jefferson City rally for the Confederate flag on Saturday.

"For me, it (the Confederate flag) is just American history," said William Meyer, the rally organizer. "It's our history, good or bad. But those who erase our history are doomed to relive it."

Meyer is organizing the rally on MoCAFS Facebook page, saying he plans to start it at the Fulton Walmart and finish at the Jefferson City Walmart at 724 W. Stadium Blvd.

He said he wants to start and finish at Walmarts because the chain has "banned anything Confederate." The plans will change if he's not allowed to use the store lots, he said.

As of Tuesday evening, 23 people committed on the Facebook page to attend the rally.

Fulton Police Chief Steve Myers said his department is aware of the event, and will have officers there.

Myers also said his department notified the Jefferson City Police Department and has been in contact with Walmart. A JCPD spokesman could not be reached late Tuesday afternoon.

Meyer said his group does not plan to engage any counter-protesters, and the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and other "hate groups who misuse the Confederate and American flags for hate" are not welcome to join their group or the rally.

"That is not what the flag means, and that is not what I intend to represent," he said.
