Your Opinion: GOP thwarts Obama's economic stimulus

Dear Editor:

It has been almost seven years since the president was elected when he took over from the Bush administration who served two terms. This country was losing 700,000 jobs per month and the stock market was in freefall. The stock market fell to 7,000 before Obama was able to initiate the stimulus package which turned the economy around. That was when the first action with its signing was the new bridge over the Osage in Tuscumbia.

That was when Team Boehner-McConnell began their crusade to block every proposal that this president advocated.

They got their Republican cohorts to vote almost 100 percent against everything he advocated to jump start the economy and create jobs. Twice they voted 100 percent against his proposals to begin infrastructure renewal for roads and bridges, which everyone knows are in terrible condition.

They also filibustered the veterans' benefits bill and prevented its passing. But they voted 100 percent for mortgage interest deductions for big houses and second homes for the billionaires; the yacht tax deduction, rental property deductions, fancy business meals deductions, low cap on taxes subject to Social Security tax, retirement subsidies for gilded retirement plans and tax deductions for their tax preparation.

In the meantime the president had to single-handedly turn the economy around. More new jobs have been created, 11.8 million since 2009 and 2014 was the best year for job growth since 1999 (Time Magazine). That is more than George H. W. Bush, 2, 637,000 and the second George Bush, 1,282, 000. Combined this is a total of 3, 919,000.

Team Boehner-McConnell-Eric Cantor et al had concocted this plan in secret even before Obama was officially elected to his first term. They couldn't care less what damage they were doing to the country and the American people. They were afraid that if Obama did anything to rejuvenate this economy he would receive the credit.

And on top of it all this Congress only works about 90 days a year. Shame on them.
