MMA fighter arrested for aggravated assault

CARLSBAD, N.M. - A New Mexico mixed martial arts fighter at the center of a 2014 deadly home invasion has been arrested for aggravated assault in Carlsbad.

Carlsbad Police Department said Joseph "Joe" Torrez was arrested Monday on suspicion of aggravated assault, although details were not released.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Carlsbad Magistrate Court.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies said Torrez fatally stabbed 25-year-old Sal Garces in 2014 after Garces and other people forced their way into Torrez's home.

The District Attorney's office in Las Cruces later said an investigation did not produce evidence to prove Torrez killed Garces without legal justification.

Torrez said he acted to protect his family.

It was not known if Torrez had hired a new attorney in his latest case.
