WASHINGTON (AP) - Zack Greinke extended his scoreless streak to 43 2/3 innings, striking out a season-high 11 through the eighth and leading the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Sunday.
Greinke's string is the longest in the majors since Orel Hershiser set the major league record of 59 shutout innings in 1988 with the Dodgers. Greinke (9-2) leads the big leagues with a 1.30 ERA. He scattered three singles, walked one and threw 119 pitches in eight innings.
This was his sixth straight scoreless start, all of them lasting at least six innings. Last Tuesday night, Greinke started the All-Star Game and gave up a leadoff homer to Mike Trout, but that run doesn't count in the regular-season statistics.
Max Scherzer (10-8) gave up one run in six innings.
METS 3, CARDINALS 1, 18 INNINGS
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ruben Tejada hit a sacrifice fly in the 18th inning and the New York Mets outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals despite stranding 25 baserunners.
The Mets went 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position, yet still won the majors' second-longest game this season. Boston beat the Yankees in 19 innings in April. It took 5 hours, 55 minutes for the Mets to top the NL Central-leading Cardinals and avoid a three-game sweep.
Tejada hit a bases-loaded fly for the lead and Eric Campbell drove in another run with a squeeze bunt.
The game was scoreless until before both teams got a run in the 13th.
Carlos Torres (3-4), the seventh Mets pitcher, was the winner. Carlos Martinez (10-4) was pressed into relief and was the Cardinals' eighth pitcher.
ASTROS 10, RANGERS 0
HOUSTON (AP) - Astros ace Dallas Keuchel struck out a career-high 13 in seven scoreless innings, leading Houston over the Texas Rangers.
Keuchel (12-4), the starting pitcher for the American League in the All-Star Game last Tuesday night, retired 18 straight batters during one stretch. The Rangers piled up a total of 29 hits in the first two games of the series, but couldn't do anything against Keuchel. He leads the AL with a 2.12 ERA.
Luis Valbuena had four hits and four RBIs, and Colby Rasmus and Preston Tucker had two-run homers.
Yovani Gallardo (7-9) yielded seven hits and tied a season-high with five runs in four-plus innings for his third straight loss.
YANKEES 2, MARINERS 1
NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Teixeira homered with two outs in the eighth inning, and the New York Yankees rallied for a victory over the Seattle Mariners for a series win.
On a steamy day with a game-time temperature of 92 degrees - a thermometer in the photographers' well down the first-base line read over 100 - both Cy Young Award winning starters, CC Sabathia and Felix Hernandez, were done after six impressive innings with the score tied 1-all.
Teixeira connected on a 1-2 pitch from former closer Fernando Rodney (2-4), who had a new copper-colored beard and hairdo. Dellin Betances (6-2) walked two in the eighth, but got Mark Trumbo to pop out to end the threat. Andrew Miller finished for his 20th save in 20 chances.
ORIOLES 9, TIGERS 3
DETROIT (AP) - Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer - part of Baltimore's six-run fourth inning against Justin Verlander - and the Orioles routed the Detroit Tigers.
Adam Jones also homered for the Orioles, and J.J. Hardy added a two-run double. Verlander (0-3) allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings, another ugly start for a Detroit rotation that has suddenly become a weak link.
Both teams finished with 14 hits.
Miguel Gonzalez (8-6) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings. The Tigers (45-46) fell below .500 for the first time since they were 1-2 early in the 2013 season.
ROYALS 4, WHITE SOX 1
CHICAGO (AP) - Danny Duffy took a shutout into the ninth inning in the longest outing of his career, and the surging Kansas City Royals beat Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox.
Lorenzo Cain and Paulo Orlando homered as Kansas City (55-35) moved a season-high 20 games above .500. The AL Central leaders took three of four in the weekend series and have won 11 of 14 overall.
Duffy (4-4) gave up rookie Tyler Saladino's leadoff drive in the ninth for his first career homer. Joe Blanton then came in and got the last three outs for his first career save in his 278th major league game.
Sale (8-5) was tagged for a season-high 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings. The All-Star lefty gave up four runs, struck out six and walked one.
ATHLETICS 14, TWINS 1
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jake Smolinski homered twice for four RBIs, Josh Reddick hit a grand slam and the Oakland Athletics slugged past the Minnesota Twins.
Billy Butler and Josh Phegley hit two-run homers for the A's, who cleared the fences a season-high five times to boost their 2015 total to 80.
Jesse Chavez (5-9) struck out nine in six innings for his second highest total of the year. Smolinski followed Butler's third-inning home run with a solo drive off Tommy Milone (5-2) for his first clout with the A's. Reddick hit his third career grand slam in the fifth against J.R. Graham.
BLUE JAYS 4, RAYS 0
TORONTO (AP) - Marco Estrada pitched eight shutout innings to outduel Chris Archer, Chris Colabello and Jose Bautista each hit two-run homers and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Blue Jays snapped a streak of four straight series losses.
Estrada (7-5) allowed just two hits through the first seven innings, with both runners erased trying to steal.
Archer (9-7), who is winless in four starts, allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings.
INDIANS 5, REDS 3, 11 INNINGS
CINCINNATI (AP) - Yan Gomes drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the tiebreaking run in the 11th inning and the Cleveland Indians beat the Cincinnati Reds.
Jason Kipnis added a sacrifice fly in the 11th for Cleveland, which scored its first four runs on walks.
Pedro Villareal (1-3) gave up singles to Mike Aviles, Michael Bourn and Brandon Moss to open the 11th and load the bases. He then walked Gomes for force in the Indians' go-ahead run and Kipnis followed with his sacrifice fly.
Marc Rzepczynski (2-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning to get the win, and Zach McAllister got the last two outs for his first career save.
PHILLIES 8, MARLINS 7
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeff Francoeur's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies over the Miami Marlins.
Ryan Howard and Freddy Galvis also homered for the Phillies. Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels was roughed up for the second straight outing, giving up five runs and eight hits in three innings. The left-hander, considered to be a top candidate to be dealt at the trading deadline, gave up a career-worst nine runs in 3 1/3 innings in his last outing.
A.J. Ramos (0-2) walked Carlos Ruiz to lead off the ninth and Francoeur homered to give the Phillies just their second sweep of the season. Hector Neris (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win.
BREWERS 6, PIRATES 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Rookie Taylor Jungmann pitched seven strong innings, Khris Davis hit a two-run double and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for a sweep.
Jungmann (5-1), added to the Brewers' roster in early June, won his third straight decision. He gave up one run and five hits.
Pittsburgh had won 13 of 16 going into the All-Star break before losing three straight at Miller Park. Jeff Locke (5-6) allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings.
Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer was carted off the field after colliding with Carlos Gomez while trying to make a tag in the second inning. Mercer couldn't put pressure on his leg and was helped onto the cart.
GIANTS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1
PHOENIX (AP) - Madison Bumgarner and four relievers scattered nine hits and Justin Maxwell homered, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Bumgarner (10-5) pitched five innings for the win, allowing a run and four hits with three strikeouts and a walk in his first start since July 10. The Giants won their sixth straight game and swept their second straight three-game series.
Patrick Corbin (1-2) took the loss on his 26th birthday, and the Diamondbacks have dropped six straight.
CUBS 4, BRAVES 1
ATLANTA (AP) - Jake Arrieta pitched seven dominant innings and Jorge Soler homered to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves.
Arrieta (11-5) gave up three hits, three walks and struck out 10, throwing 73 of his 112 pitches for strikes. Over his last six starts, the right-hander is 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA.
Shelby Miller (5-6) struck out eight and allowed four hits, four walks and three runs - one earned - in six innings for the Braves. Atlanta has lost seven of eight.
After James Russell walked Perez with two outs in the ninth, Jason Motte gave up Simmons' RBI single, but he retired pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes on a groundout to end it.
