Your Opinion: Ruling based on liberty, not Bible

Dear Editor:

Regarding the letters to the editor June 30 by Byrd and Roam bemoaning the decision by "SCOTUS" respecting same sex marriage. Both articles expressed sadness, sorrow, pain, and outrage. A question for both authors, indeed, for all Christians outraged by this decision; Why? Why the outrage?

Yes your Bible does speak against homosexuality; however that is really not the point. The United States was established approximately two and a half centuries ago under the premise of individual liberty. All would be allowed to worship their deity as they see fit, or not. (If you don't believe me, please go to the Internet or the local library and read the Constitution of the United States, particularly the First Amendment. While you are at it, visit the 14th Amendment.)

Christians have absolutely no basis to demand that the nation's (our) laws implement the Bible. The First Amendment prohibits establishing laws based upon religion. The 14th Amendment prohibits states from writing laws limiting individual "life, liberty, or property."

The majority on the current Supreme Court bench basically found the state has "no compelling interest" in restricting the right of two persons of the same sex to marry. They were correct.

The hue and cry comes. Ted Cruz calls into Sean Hannity's radio program to proclaim "this has been the darkest 24 hours in the history of the Republic." Mike Huckabee thunders "I will not accept this decision."

The bloviating gasbags' bloviate. On and on, ad naseum. Cruz is correct; this a dark time for the Republic, but not in the way he portrays.

We, as a nation failed. Forcing the Supreme Court of the United States to render this decision, society failed. Politicians, you represent us, the citizens. You did not solve this issue, you allowed it to fester to the point the Supreme Court was forced to act.

Citizenry, we put these politicians into play. Many of us apparently have insufficient understanding of civics to understand our own (and others) basic civil rights. And we pay too much attention to the bloviating gasbags fomenting and cheering on divisiveness.

Christians, you have not shown empathy for the civil rights of your fellow citizens. And you failed to muzzle your own bloviating gasbags preaching their hate and poisoned "Christianity."

Gays, could compromises and allowances have been found? If we as a nation continue this path, the divisiveness will only worsen.

Dark days. Dark days indeed.
