Lower Bottom Road closed by slide

The Cole County Public Works Department announced Monday that part of Lower Bottom Road will be closed due to a road slide.

This affects addresses from 11923 to 12217.

Public works officials said the ground has been super saturated by the recent heavy rains and they noticed a crack in the road in this area last Thursday.

The crack became bigger over the weekend and after an engineer looked at the area, he recommended closing the road.

"We're going to do some exploratory drilling to see what the soil condition is in the area and that will hopefully help us determine how we'll repair the road," Cole County Public Works Director Larry Benz said.

The heavy rains have taken a toll on county roads.

Last week, pavement on Millbrook Road at the Route D intersection buckled. It was removed, and a base of rock was put in as a temporary fix.

The low-water crossing on North Branch Road collapsed on one driving lane, and it was excavated and rock was put in as a temporary replacement.

Water washed the shoulder out on the east side of Mount Carmel Road between U.S. 54 and Old Bass Road.

All these roads are along the Moreau River which had a major rise after heavy rains.
