Your Opinion: Supreme Court ruling reflects modern mindset

Dear Editor:

Many in America are jubilant about the recent Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage. It seems that ruling validates the current moral framework of our society that is driven by feelings and opinion, independent of any authoritative moral compass.

Our foundational modern axiom that has been repeated so often that it is seldom questioned is - There is no such thing as absolute truth. If that axiom is valid, it follows that we are each free to pursue our own perception of truth. We are free to establish our own personal parameters of what is right and what is wrong, sexual and otherwise. What is true for me may not be true for you, and vice versa. We each make our own map of life, and there is no north.

So then, it is quite all right for the old man down the street to dislike children even if you like them. He can put up signs to keep them all out of his yard. But what if he decides to kill and eat them? On what basis can you say that his behavior is "wrong" if we are each free to determine our own truth? His feelings are just as valid as yours. Remember, there is no such thing as absolute truth.

Even the process of the Supreme Court ruling reflects this modern mindset. Although sworn to uphold the constitution, the majority decision was driven by emotion and opinion, circumventing that document which was designed to be "true north" for this country. Of the ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts said, "If you are among the many Americans - of whatever sexual orientation - who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today's decision. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it."

Which brings us to the fundamental flaw of this whole moral paradigm. The foundational axiom - There is no such thing as absolute truth - is it absolutely true? Either way you answer negates the whole premise, like saying that "all generalizations are false." It, and all perspectives and philosophies - even Supreme Court rulings - that spring from it are moral and philosophical nonsense.
