Heavy rains damage several Cole County roads, homes

Wednesday evening's rains damaged several roads and some homes in Cole County.

Cole County Public Works Director Larry Benz said two homes at Redfield Golf Course had approximately 15 inches of water in their basements after the lakes at the course couldn't handle the heavy rains and overflowed their primary emergency spillways, letting the water make its way into the homes.

Several roads were also damaged by the heavy rain.

Pavement on Millbrook Road at the Route D intersection buckled. It was removed, and a base of rock was put in as a temporary fix.

The low-water crossing on North Branch Road collapsed on one driving lane, and it was excavated and rock was put in as a temporary replacement.

Water washed the shoulder out on the east side of Mount Carmel Road between U.S. 54 and Old Bass Road.

All these roads are along the Moreau River. The forecast calls for the river in Jefferson City to reach 27 feet - 10 feet above the flood stage of 17 feet - sometime this morning before it begins a fall to go below flood stage this afternoon.

The releases of water from Bagnell Dam had no effect on the Moreau River, which drains into the Missouri River.

The forecast for the Missouri River in Jefferson City is for the river to stay around 22 feet through Saturday morning before beginning a steady fall starting that afternoon.
