The city of Eldon has cancelled some activities for its annual Independence Day celebration Saturday due to weather conditions.

According to the city's Facebook page, staff said they will not have the carnival games, bingo game, dunking booth, barrel rides or pet show because of the weather.

Other activities still planned for the celebration include its kick-off tonight with the Miss Firecracker contests.

Children, ages infant to 12, can compete for various titles in the Miss and Mr. Firecracker Patriotic Pageant at the Eldon Community Center.

Check-in begins at 5 p.m. with the pageant starting at 6 p.m. The following titles will be crowned during the pageant: ages 0 to 3 years old, Baby Miss and Mr. Firecracker; 4 to 6 years old, Little Miss and Mr.; 7 to 9 years old, Young Miss and Mr.; and 10 to 12 years old, Junior Miss. The Eldon Community Center is located at 309 E. Second St. in Eldon.

The 17th Annual 5K Independence Day Run/Walk in Eldon is still planned for Saturday morning, with registration at 6:30 a.m. and the race at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $20.

The celebration continues Saturday with its annual parade, themed "Tribute to Our Troops." The parade begins at 10 a.m. and begin and end at Second and Pine streets, weaving through downtown Eldon.

Guests can also cool off at the nearby Eldon Aquatic Center from noon-3 p.m. with half-price admission.

Even though many of the afternoon family activities have been cancelled, the city still plans to have its live entertainment from 5-9 p.m. from The Moondogs.

At dusk, people may grab an outdoor spot at the air park to view the annual fireworks display. However, city staff said no parking will be allowed on the air park's grass.

Additionally, the Eldon R-1 Schools will open up the Mustang Memorial Park at the Eldon Middle School to view the fireworks display from the stands for free.

As in the past, KS-95, 95.1 FM radio station, will present a patriotic music simulcast along with the fireworks display.
