2 swept away in floodwater, later found dead identified

HEMATITE, Mo. (AP) - Authorities have identified two women who died after being swept away in floodwater in Jefferson County.

Officials say the victims are 35-year-old Sarah Barrett of De Soto and 50-year-old Angela Kirby of Festus. Authorities say they were swept into Buck Creek, which overflowed after about 5 inches of rain fell in the area Wednesday night.

Jefferson County emergency management director Warren Robinson says Barrett was recovered about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Missouri Highway Patrol officials said Barrett's body was found nearly a mile from where multiple vehicles were swept away from a parking lot near the creek.

Authorities say Kirby's body was found around 5:30 p.m. Thursday about 1 ½ to 2 miles away from the parking lot.

The search for other potential victims was called off around 8 p.m. when Patrol Cpl. Justin Wheatley said all people were believed to be accounted for.
