HAZELWOOD, Mo. (AP) - Corps of Engineers officials say removal of contaminated soil from Coldwater Creek in north St. Louis County and other contamination sites could take until 2020 or longer.
More than 100 people attended a hearing Thursday, where corps officials talked about cleanup of St. Louis-area radioactive waste sites, including Coldwater Creek. Some people who grew up along the creek in years past believe health ailments, including cancer, are caused by radioactive material in the creek.
St. Louis Public Radio (http://bit.ly/1EuKtxZ) reports that corps health physicist Jon Rankins told the crowd that there is no immediate risk to residents now living along the creek, but long-term exposure does pose a health risk.
